Southeast Health Achieves 16% Reduction in Pressure Injuries, 25% Reduction in Sepsis

Southeast Health, a 420-bed regional referral center, is a not-for-profit community health system dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of the residents of southeast Alabama, southwest Georgia and the Florida Panhandle. Through advanced treatment and technology, it provides for the changing healthcare needs of the growing communities it serves since 1957. Southeast Health exists to promote healing, prevent disease, educate medicine’s brightest minds, and bring wellness and prosperity to the region.

Southeast Health strives to enable quality improvements and lower rates of target diseases and avoidable events. Utilizing the Jvion CORE™, clinicians are more effectively targeting patients on a trajectory toward an adverse event, determining whether something can be done to change the outcome, and identifying the most effective interventions that will mitigate a patient’s risk.

Southeast Health is using the power of the Jvion CORE to target pressure injuries and inpatient sepsis within the inpatient population. Nurses, physicians, and other clinical resources engage the Machine to drive prevention efforts earlier in the episode of care before signs or symptoms are present. As a result, Southeast Health is enabling the true primary prevention of events and conditions that are traditionally treated with secondary prevention efforts, including inpatient sepsis and pressure injuries.

For pressure injuries, Southeast Health evaluated the potential impact on the patient population and the provider’s capacity to apply the Jvion CORE’s recommended interventions. They determined that pressure injuries had the greatest potential for improved quality outcomes and that the internal program already in place would be enhanced by this AI-enabled technology solution.

For sepsis, physician and nursing leadership collaborated to develop clinical workflows and order to intervene with patients identified as high and medium risk of sepsis. Jvion’s prescriptive analytics enabled a shift in mindset and clinical approach from early identification of sepsis to preventing the progression toward sepsis by ensuring that the right stakeholders and leaders were aligned and engaged throughout the process.

Pressure Injuries

  • 16.75% average reduction in number of pressure injuries per month
  • $81,320 – $326,800 cost avoidance per month

  • 25.5% average monthly reduction in sepsis
  • $442,000 – $741,000 cost avoidance per month
  • 455 average monthly total avoided patient days

“Within the first year of implementation, we went beyond our initial readmissions vector to include pressure injuries. Based on the great results and patient outcomes that we achieved, we are continuing to expand the application of the Jvion CORE to other clinical challenges including inpatient sepsis. The CORE and the team behind it have become critical tools that are helping us to achieve our mission and focus on care excellence.”Lara McCall RNBSN CCM, Director Case Management, Southeast Alabama Medical Center
